The Rug Doctor floor cleaner (4), was brought in some months ago with one of the dual rollers not rotating. Testing the cleaner found that it shuts down after a few seconds with a regular - beep - beep - beep, and error code in a window at the top of the handle. In the time we have at a repair cafe session we could not do much disassembly, because as is usual with most modern all plastic items, getting into it without damage would need care. It needs a more through disassembly and careful investigation to trace the wiring and a problem that looks like a failed motor, so off to home it went.
After a lot head scratching and careful tweaking of the adjoining plastic parts we eventually found two sets of wiring for the roller motors buried at the bottom of the main upright assembly. Accessing some crimped joints found that both roller motors had power when starting but only one motor went round. With the rollers removed the motor and gearbox assemblies could be seen - maybe one had a broken gearbox ?.

Underneath some silicon sealer on the non working side we found the motor mount was just one large screw, removal of that allowed access, and we then found that the whole assembly had come loose on that screw, had rotated on its mount, and sheared off the wires as the housing and mount acted like a pair of scissors (2). Fortunately the internal electronics hadn't been damaged as the shearing action could have caused a short on the motor drive electronics, but luckily it didn't.
New wires of the same colour and gauge were connected to the motor and pulled into the housing using the old wires to pull the new ones through. The rewired motor assembly was reassembled, latched in place so it couldn't turn, then resealed. The new wires were reconnected to the old wiring with solder joints and heatshrink sleeving (3), as access to the electronics / battery housing was still evading us. The cleaner is now fully working - and tested on our kitchen floor !. [Back to the top]
