This job, from the session at the Vivid Community Centre, was Tigger - he had lost his bounce and his happy Tigger outlook. Not too surprising really as he had an arm broken in two places, and it looked like something, possibly with teeth, had had a good chow down on the phone cable (3), he was reported as he just - "didn't work".

A quick examination found that a lot of the inside was dusted with what looked like instant coffee (1/2), really !. After removing mountains of hot melt glue, Chinese assembly people really love hot melt glue, we got the motor assembly out. Some broken bits were evident as was a bad joint on the ringer, also the proverbial split plastic part, there always seems to be one of these (2) in the mechanisims we repair. In this case it looks like it’s holding together reasonably well so it’s been left well alone. We cleaned out the "coffee", fixed the ringer, put some C sized batteries in, selected "demo mode" and away went the motor assembly.
Next we welded his broken arm back together (4) with some donor plastic gleaned from the injection mouling sprues inside the base. Some gaps in his armpit had to be widened slightly to allow extra space for the slightly larger parts after welding. Then his arms were reassembled to the body and the whole, hopefully fixed Tigger, plugged into the base unit.
Pressed the "demo mode" button and Tigger is now apparently as good as new, a bouncy bouncy, happy Tigger (5). Another of our volunteers, Bob D., helped out with final checks on a telephone landline as we don't have one anymore, so fitted with a new cable as the eaten one is unrepairable, we confirmed that Tigger is fully working, bouncing, singing, receiving calls and dialling out. Another sucess story. [Back to the top]
